Crumbed mushrooms, also known as breaded mushrooms, are a delicious appetizer or snack where mushrooms are coated in breadcrumbs and then fried or baked until crispy. The breading adds a crunchy texture to the mushrooms, while the mushrooms themselves provide a savory and earthy flavor. Here's a basic recipe for making crumbed mushrooms:
Ingredients:
- Fresh mushrooms (button mushrooms or other varieties)
- All-purpose flour
- Eggs (beaten)
- Breadcrumbs (seasoned with salt, pepper, and optionally, herbs like parsley or thyme)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Cooking oil for frying
Instructions:
Prepare the Mushrooms:
- Clean the mushrooms and trim the stems if needed. Ensure they are dry.
Set Up a Breading Station:
- In three separate shallow bowls, set up a breading station with one bowl containing all-purpose flour, another with beaten eggs, and the third with seasoned breadcrumbs.
Coat the Mushrooms:
- Take each mushroom and first coat it in flour, shaking off any excess. Then dip it into the beaten eggs, ensuring it is well-coated. Finally, roll it in the seasoned breadcrumbs, pressing the breadcrumbs onto the mushroom to adhere.
Repeat the Coating (Optional):
- For a thicker coating, you can repeat the process by dipping the mushroom back into the beaten eggs and breadcrumbs.
Heat Oil:
- Heat cooking oil in a pan or deep fryer to around 350°F to 375°F (175°C to 190°C).
Fry the Mushrooms:
- Carefully place the breaded mushrooms into the hot oil, frying until they are golden brown and crispy. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes.
Drain and Season:
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried mushrooms from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. Season them with a pinch of salt and pepper while they are still hot.
Serve:
- Serve the crumbed mushrooms hot, either on their own or with a dipping sauce of your choice, such as garlic aioli, ranch dressing, or marinara sauce.
